Britney Romero, a freshman health major at Texas A&M University, was found dead in the courtyard of a student dormitory on October 16, 2023.
She appeared to have fallen from the building’s third-floor balcony, Vice President for Student Affairs Joe Ramirez confirmed in a statement to the community.
‘It is with deep sadness that I confirm that a Texas A&M student passed away early this morning. Britney Romero was a freshman health major. Our hearts ache for Britney’s family and friends,’ said Ramirez.
Romero’s death has shocked and saddened the Texas A&M community.
She was a bright and talented young woman with a passion for helping others.
Her family and friends are devastated by her loss.

On Sunday morning, the Texas A&M University Police Department started investigating the death, according the the campus newspaper The Battalion.
Ramirez said a Justice of the Peace has ordered an autopsy.
‘We want to emphasize that Texas A&M’s top priority is our commitment to the well-being and safety of all our students,’ he said.
‘We intend to conduct a thorough and comprehensive review of what happened immediately.’
‘We encourage our Aggie community to come together to support one another, as we always do at times like this, while also praying for and supporting Britney’s family and all those grieving this tragic loss,’ Ramirez said.
The university is providing resources for the community at this time. They have counselors available at University Health Services, a Texas A&M HelpLine and access to the TELUS Health Support App for students.
Ramirez concluded the statement: ‘We are the Aggies, the Aggies are we. True to each other as Aggies can be.’
