Bernard Summers: City of Columbia employee driving sanitation truck dies in crash with another city vehicle

The City of Columbia says a public works employee identified as Bernard Summers has died after their work vehicle collided with another public works vehicle.

Columbia Police said the collision took place Friday in the 5100 block of Farrow Road near the intersection of Craven Street.

City of Columbia officials said around 2:45 p.m., the two public works vehicles hit each other.

At this point, police haven’t said what they believe led up to the crash.

Bernard Summers was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver was taken to Prisma Health Richland hospital with what the city describes as non life-threatening injuries.

No passengers were in either vehicle.

“The City of Columbia is deeply saddened by the loss of one our beloved City employees,” City Manager Teresa Wilson said in a statement. “Our prayers and condolences go out to the families, friends and co-workers affected by this tragic event.”

An investigation into the collision is being done by the Columbia Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit.
