Austin Carter: Bicyclist dies after being hit by vehicle in Edwardsburg

A 30-year-old man is dead after he was struck by a car while riding a bike Friday evening near the Indiana border.

Police identified the man as Elkhart resident Austin Carter.

The crash was reported just before 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, on U.S. 12 near Garver Lake Road in Ontwa Township, said Ontwa Township – Edwardsburg Police Department Chief Douglas Westrick.

Carter had been traveling eastbound on his bike when he was struck by an eastbound vehicle driven by a 74-year-old Edwardsburg man, Westrick said. Carter was taken to an area hospital, where he died of his injuries.

Westrick said dark clothing and no reflectors or lights on the bike were factors in the crash.
