Ashgold football club blew a 2-0 lead but still managed to find a win against RS Berkane in the 2nd round of the CAF Confederations Cup qualifiers.
Ashgold would wake up on Sunday with mixed feelings. On one hand, they have a win to protect when they go to Morocco in two weeks time. On the other hand, they would look back to the game at Obuasi and feel like they deserved more from it.
The game began with Ashgold making their intentions very clear and known. The miners attacked the Moroccans from the onset on search of that all important early goal.
The reward for their efforts came in the 17th minute after an Eric Donkor Shot/Cross deceived everyone on the pitch except himself, to find it’s way into the net.
The miners were not done there. The pressure intensified and with the passionate Obuasi fans behind their club, Ashgold were more than motivated.
McCarthy was denied moments after, with his effort coming off the crossbar.
Captain and topscorer in the qualifiers,Shafiu Mumuni, soon got into the action.
The striker capitalised on some sloppy defending by RS Berkane and doubled Ashgold’s lead on the stroke of halftime. It was all joy at Obuasi at this point.
After the break, Berkane capitalised on a sleeping Ashgold defence as a freekick close to the box found Aziz unmarked. The Berkane stalwart made no mistake and pulled one back for the Moroccans.
They were not done there, however, as moments later, they also capitalised on an Ashgold defensive blunder with Laachir, the man to score.
After all that work in the first half, the miners had gifted last year’s finalists 2 away goals and a huge advantage.
Ashgold however picked themselves up and soon got another goal through Amos Addai in the 75th minute.
The miners held on for the rest of the game as Laachir once again, came close for Berkane as he found his shot hitting the crossbar.
Ashgold now take this slim win to Morocco with the winners for both legs qualifying to the next to round.
