New Albany native Kennedy Reid isn’t your typical American Idol contestant. By day, the 23-year-old works as a funeral director and embalmer at Spring Valley Funeral Home.
But after hours, she sheds her professional garb and steps into the spotlight as a passionate singer-songwriter.
Music has always been close to Reid’s heart. Growing up in Sellersberg, Indiana, she began performing for residents in nursing homes as a teenager.
Her captivating voice and stage presence soon landed her a regular spot as a performer and emcee at the Grand Ole Country Music Show in West Point, Kentucky.
However, music wasn’t her only calling. Determined to follow another passion, Reid pursued a career in mortuary science, eventually becoming a licensed funeral director and embalmer.
While many might find this an unusual combination, Reid seamlessly merges her love for music with her dedication to honoring loved ones in their final moments.

Her story and talent was enough to get her in front of Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Ritchie.
“The first audition was very nerve-wracking,” she said. “It’s a very surreal moment. You just can’t believe you’re about to sing for what most people would consider legends and it was a great experience for me, though.”
Reid sang the Tina Turner track “River Deep, Mountain High” accompanied by her best friend Jean Ann and it impressed the judges enough to earn that trip through to Hollywood for the next round of competition.
