A young man died in a hail of gunfire midday Monday in a north Birmingham neighborhood.
Police Monday night identified the victim as Amauria Caffey. He was 20 and lived in Birmingham.
Caffey is the city’s 135th homicide this year, which is the same number of people killed in Birmingham in all of 2023.
The shots rang out at 12:12 p.m. in the 1600 block of Fifth Street North. That location is in the Enon Ridge neighborhood.
Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said more than 20 shots were fired.
She said it was not immediately clear if the victim or anyone else returned fire.
Wade said an argument preceded the deadly shots.
Police radio communication indicated a somewhat chaotic scene, with at least woman taking cover under a vehicle in fear of the gunfire.
She called 911 multiple times before police convinced her the immediately threat of danger was over.
More than a dozen distraught family and friends flocked to the scene, visibly emotional.
Caffey’s father ran through the police perimeter trying to get to his son, but police were able to get to him and stop him from going any further.
A man at the scene identified himself to AL.com as the victim’s grandfather and said he died on his front porch.
Wade said no arrests have been made.
