Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has said that President Akufo Addo lost some votes in the 2020 elections because of his fight against as galamsey.

He said this while in an interview with Accra based Joy News on Wednesday.

The NPP government after taking power launched a campaign against illegal mining which according to them, was destroying water bodies in the country.

It grew to become a matter of great concern and saw trained troops being deployed to mining areas to ensure that proper mining activities were taking place.

In his interview, the Information Minister noted that the fight against galamsey put the president in a tough spot of criticism since powerful and influential persons were involved in the act as well. He established that it went a long way to affect the president’s effective fight against the act and cost him votes.

He said; “I hear people ask how come your margin dropped from 900 thousand to 500 thousand?. We (NPP) are clear in our minds that the fight against galamsey is one of the reasons, if you look at the returns for many of the galamsey areas, they voted heavily against the president and his candidates because at the same time, while even internal party persons were sabotaging the fight, you also have people on the other side of the political device.”
