Ace broadcaster with Despite Media, Afia Pokua popular in the public domain as Vim Lady has accused the majority side of parliament present on the appointment committee of parliament of babysitting ministerial nominees at the on-going ministerial vetting.
According to Afia Pokua , the actions of the members are harming the progress of the initiative by making it easy for nominees.
The appointment committee of parliament is currently vetting ministerial nominees for the second term of the Nana Akuffo Addo government. So far, a number of ministers designate have made an appearance at the committee, with some undergoing tough scrutiny.
In an interview with Good Evening Ghana on Thursday, Afia Pokua said it was rather sad that the majority on the committee are going soft on the minister-designate.
She noted that the reason could be because they could be selected for deputy minister’s positions and as such wouldn’t want bad blood with the ministers.
She indicated that it halts the progress of the committee and advised that members of the committee be independent in parliament moving forward.
“I found it interesting that members of the opposition side often than not are the ones doing that [asking tough questions]. You find those at the government side, babysitting the nominees when they come before the committee,” she said in a discussion on Good Evening Ghana on Thursday, 18 February 2021.
“Because of this provision that most of the ministers will be selected from Parliament, so, there is an anticipation that perhaps they may come before the same committee as deputy ministers so they do not want to ask difficult questions,” Afia Pokuaa said.
