AFCON Daily: Egypt kick start tournament with win over Zimbabwe

The host Nation Egypt started the tournament on a good note, with a 1-0 win over the less favored Zimbabweans.

Mahmoud Trezeguet’s solitary goal in the 41st minute was enough to ensure the Pharoahs took all three points in the group A opener.

After a very beautiful and glamorous opening ceremony at the 70,000 seater Cairo International Stadium, the football commenced.

Egypt began the brighter side as they chased an all important early goal in the opening stages. They attacked mosty through the left side of the Zimbabwean defence with Mohammed Salah warming himself into the game and coming close with some half chances himself.

Their inability to break down a very organised defence allowed the warriors to gradually come into the game with some nice combinations between Khama Biliat and Karuru.

The first real chance of the game fell to the former, after a quick free kick had him in on goal. Unluckily for him, the Egyptian goalkeeper El Shanawy was quick off his line to close in on hom before he could pick his spot.

Moments later, the Egyptians broke the deadlock after Mahmoud Trezegeut, after breaking up play, charged at the Zimbabwean defence and cut in after a quick one-two to devastating effect.

The Zimbabwean defence that has been resolute until then were finally broken.

The second half saw the Zimbabweans work tirelessly to get the equaliser but the Egyptians held on for a win to begin their campaign.

DR Congo and Uganda face off tomorrow afternoon to round up the group’s opening games in the 2019 AFCON
