Adriana Sylmetaj, a pregnant Albanian woman and her unborn baby were killed when her allegedly drunk partner crashed at high speed in Staten Island, New York.

Adriana Sylmetaj, 23, was thrown from the Dodge Challenger, which was travelling at speeds in excess of 100mph before colliding with a wooden post at around 5am on Sunday morning.

Her boyfriend Adem Nikeziq, 30, was later charged with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, assault, vehicular assault, reckless endangerment, driving while intoxicated and driving while ability impaired by alcohol in the fatal wreck, an NYPD spokesman said.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the Albanian couple were traveling southbound on Hylan Boulevard in New Dorp at 4.44am when Nikesiq who was driving the Dodge Challenger lost control.

The vehicle came to a final stop after it struck a wooden utility pole and splitting into three parts, police said.

The severity of the impact reportedly caused Adriana to be flung from the car and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Nikeziq suffered minor injuries, police added.

He was taken to Staten Island University North Hospital after police detected he was showing signs of intoxication, the spokesman said.
