Addiel Ortiz: Motorcyclist, 9-year-old SUV passenger killed in N.J. crash

A motorcyclist and a 9-year-old passenger in an SUV were killed when the vehicles collided in Cumberland County on Thursday evening, police said.

Addiel Ortiz, 31, of Millville, was riding a motorcycle eastbound on Maple Avenue near Becker Drive in Vineland shortly before 6 p.m. when the vehicle struck a westbound SUV that was making a left turn into the Joseph E. Romano Sports Complex, according to Vineland police.

Ortiz and a passenger in the SUV, identified by police as a 9-year-old Ocean View boy with the initials E.B., were pronounced dead at the scene.

The SUV driver, a 42-year-old woman from Ocean View, was not injured.

No charges have been filed, police said early Friday, but the crash remains under investigation.

Ortiz worked as a New Jersey state corrections officer and leaves behind a fiancé, Destiny and four children, according to a GoFundMe created to help his family.

He served with the Department of Corrections for 10 years, according to a Facebook post from NJPBA Local 105, and was most recently working at Bayside State Prison in Maurice River Township.
