Abnerd Joseph, an assistant principal for Intrinsic Schools’ downtown campus was killed in a shooting inside an apartment complex in the Loop Thursday night.
Abnerd Joseph lost his life during an argument late Thursday night inside a Loop condo building, authorities said.
Who was Abnerd Joseph?
According to the school’s website, Joseph became an assistant principal with Intrinsic Schools in 2022, focusing on school climate, student discipline, school-wide transitions and procedures, and student safety.
Prior to moving to Chicago, a website biography said Joseph spent a decade as an educator, including five years as an algebra and life sciences teacher, and five years as an assistant principal.
Students say Joseph was kind and caring and always had their backs, even outside of school.
Ashley Joseph, his sister and one of his six siblings, described the beloved educator as “the most positive person you’d meet.”
“He made being smart cool and that influenced a lot of the youth, so he moved out to Chicago to make a difference in the world,” she said. “He went there to go do that, and he wasn’t done.”
The shooting incident
Officers were called to a high-rise on the first block of East Monroe Street around 7:38 p.m.
The victim was in an argument with a 45-year-old man who pulled a gun and shot him, according to police.
Joseph was transported to Northwestern Hospital in critical condition, but later pronounced dead.
The suspect, a 45-year-old man, was taken into custody and had yet to be charged as of Friday afternoon.
