Swedish side Trelleborgs FF have reached an agreement with Kumasi Asante Kotoko regarding the signing of striker Abdul Fatawu Safiu from the Kumasi based club.
Fatawu, 25, was initially scheduled to join Heisenberg FC and actually travelled to Sweden to discuss that transfer.
However, after Kotoko failed to reach an agreement with the club, Fatawu returned to Accra to renegotiate terms with another Swedish club, Trelleborgs FF.
Fatawu has enjoyed a wonderful year with the porcupine warriors, scoring 11 goals as Kotoko won the just ended Normalisation Committee’s special competition Tier 1.
He also featured for Kotoko in last season’s CAF confederations cup competition, scoring 3 and assisting 2 more, as Kotoko failed to go past the group stages of the competition.
His good form was soon noticed by Black Stars coach, Kwasi Appiah who named him in the preliminary 29 man squad for the 2019 AFCON.
The former Vancouver whitecaps youngster, posted an emotional farewell message to the club , saying:
“It was a great pleasure to have represented this great club. Within a short period, this club has given me everything I have ever dreamt of.”
“My appreciation goes to the board,technical staffs, teammates and of course not forgetting the love and support from the fantastic fans.”
“I wish the club and the fans all the best of success in the coming seasons and I know one day our path will cross again.”
Fatawu joined Kotoko from Techiman Eleven Wonders and spent 2 years at the club. He formerlly played for Shirak FC and Vancouver Whitecaps.
He now joins the Swedish club on an initial 4 month loan with an option of a 2 year contract.
Kotoko are currently preparing to face Kano Pillars of Nigeria in the return leg of their CAF Confederations Cup preliminary stage as they will be looking to overturn a 3-2 deficit in the first leg.
