18-Year-Old Carter Halverson Killed in O’Brien County Accident

A tragic accident in Paullina, Iowa, has claimed the life of 18-year-old Carter Halverson, a senior at South O’Brien High School.

The fatal crash occurred early Saturday morning, December 21, 2024.

According to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, a 911 call from OnStar alerted authorities to a potential accident at 12:11 a.m.

The call reported a possible collision near 5454 500th Street Southwest in Paullina.

OnStar’s system detected deployed airbags and indicated that the vehicle, a 2023 Chevrolet Malibu, may have rolled over.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they found the car in a north ditch. Officials believe the vehicle was traveling eastbound on 500th Street when it veered off the road, struck a driveway, and rolled at least once.

Halverson, the only person in the car, was thrown from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the accident.

The Paullina Police Department, Paullina Fire Department, Paullina Ambulance, and the O’Brien County Medical Examiner assisted at the scene.

Halverson’s death has left the South O’Brien community in mourning. He was remembered as a bright and caring student with a promising future.
