Celebrity Endorsement Of Politicians Not A Big Deal In Ghana - Koku Anyidoho

Former Deputy General Secretary of National Democratic Congress (NDC),Koku Anyidoho, has stated his view on endorsement of celebrities prior to elections in Ghana and he seems to disagree with celebrities being signed to campaign for political parties.

In an interview with Prince Osei Bonsu of Asempa Fm’s EKO SII SEN show on Wednesday, the politician stated emphatically that Ghana is not there when it comes to celebrity endorsements because most Ghanaians perceive celebrities as having the lifestyle of the roles they play in movies and music. “Without any disrespect to our celebrities, Ghana has not reached that stage yet, where celebrity endorsement is a big thing, because Ghana is still a conservative society just that people don’t know.”

Koku Anyidoho was stating his take on some issues he thinks has to be addressed concerning his political party, NDC. He narrated that in 2008, what helped the NDC win power was the door-to-door campaign they embarked on. He said President Nana Akuffo Addo was using celebrities to campaign, making him loose. He added that funny enough, President Nana Akuffo Addo used the door-to-door in 2016 and they went to celebrity endorsements and huge billboards. He further stated that celebrities and the roles they play in movies are misunderstood. “Some of the roles celebrities play in their line of business, people think it’s their lifestyle and do not agree with them.”

In a response to what he has been up to since he lost in the NDC elections sometime last year, Mr Anyidoho said he has been taking some time off his busy schedule to rest. “the last week of November, December and January, I decided to rest”. He added that he together with Professor Kwamena Ahoi have been working on a biography of the late President, Professor John Evans Attah Mills. “We are working on Professor Attah Mills’ biography. Hopefully, this July will be 7 years since he passed.”

Elaborating further on the reasons for the book as monitored by ghlinks.com.gh, he told the host OB that since the death of the late president, society has misinterpreted the life of the man he defines as unique and exemplary. He explained that the life of the late president, Professor John Evans Fiifi Attah Mills is one that is worth reading for generations but if care is not taken, his legacy would be forgotten. As such, he and Professor Ahoi have interviewed close to 70 people consisting of family, friends, students and close relatives of the late president to get an up to date biography. He said the biography which will be a book will put to bed all rumours surrounding the late president’s death too. “By July this year, we should launch the 25 chapter book and tell the truth of the late president per life achievements so that we can put to rest all these rumours.”

Koku Anyidoho disclosed that those close to him knew Professor Atta Mills had heath challenges, but didn’t know it was serious to prevent him from performing his duties as president. “We all know he had health challenges but I am not clairvoyant”.
